Primary school children find their oaks again

In the fall of 2022, the primary school pupils of the second grade of the KGS Höfen-Mützenich buried previously collected acorns in the soil of a cutting site at the Kluckbach. The land was purchased as part of the “Patches & Corridors” LIFE project, and the spruce trees growing there had been felled...

With the aim of creating a species-rich mixed deciduous forest here, contact was also sought with the primary school. The children collected hundreds of acorns and planted them in the ground under supervision one morning in October 2022.

Almost two years later, in September 2024, another hike to Kluckbach took place with the now fourth-graders from the school. The children were able to see the success of their planting efforts for themselves. Several young oaks were found and marked with a bamboo stick. Some of these small oaks were provided with browsing protection. The remaining trees will soon be protected by the project staff.

You can find more information on the KGS Höfen-Mützenich website, and not just about the oak project! The elementary school is a certified national park school of the Eifel National Park. Through the commitment of their teachers, the pupils learn in a variety of ways what a national park is and learn a lot about the diverse aspects of nature in their immediate surroundings.

Our excursions as part of the Life Project were a small contribution to this.
