On the initiative of the Rotary Club Monschau-Nordeifel, 100 trees were planted last Saturday. The club had called on the citizens of Monschau-Imgenbroich to gather at the edge of the village near the Tränkhof in the morning.

Around 25 helpers turned up with shovels and hoes to play their part in reforesting the slopes of a small side valley towards the Belgenbach.

The forest patch itself is the result of a forest conversion measure of our EU nature conservation project LIFE “Patches & Corridors”. In the fall of 2022, the spruce forest was felled to make room for a species-rich mixed deciduous forest. Oaks, hornbeams, cherries and willows were donated by the Rotary Club together with suitable browsing protection and now form the foundation of the future forest on the left-hand slope of the valley. A closer look reveals aspen, maple and birch trees that have planted themselves in the wild, as well as black alder on the stream bank and mountain elm trees planted by the project team on the right-hand side of the valley.

The planting work took around two hours, and according to the helpers from Imgenbroich, the time passed quickly. Perhaps this campaign can also serve as a model for similar planting campaigns - our project area still offers plenty of scope for this.
